Throughout its history, the Episcopal Church has been a leader in education and peacebuilding. The Church has run primary and secondary schools across the country for many decades and actively contributed to peace efforts—first addressing conflicts between the north and south and now tackling internal tribal disputes that continue to affect the nation. Today, the Church operates 288 primary schools, 12 secondary schools, and 12 colleges, reflecting its enduring commitment to education and societal transformation.
The Open Episcopal University (OEU) embodies the Church’s long-standing vision for a Christian-centered institution of higher learning. As far back as 2011, a feasibility study commissioned by His Royal Grace
Archbishop Fire Agada C. Emmanuel identified the critical need for a multi-campus university with a strong Christian foundation. Building upon the Church’s network of theological and other higher education colleges, the OEU now realizes this aspiration as a private Christian university.
Education has always been a cornerstone of the Church’s mission to empower individuals and communities to flourish peacefully and prosperously while advancing God’s work. The university’s underlying philosophy emphasizes the belief that everyone has a God-given vocation—whether as lawyers, pastors, teachers, parents, medical professionals, social workers, engineers, peacebuilders, or artists. The OEU is committed to offering an expanding range of subjects through its degree programs to equip holistically educated servant leaders who will contribute meaningfully to society and beyond.
Governance and Admission:
The university is owned by the Council of Bishops and formerly known as Pan Africa Episcopal University (PAE). Now renamed the Open Episcopal University (OEU), it is accredited by the NUC. The OEU welcomes applicants with an O-level qualification and at least three credits, as well as holders of OND, NCE, or ND certifications. Everyone with a passion for education and learning is encouraged to apply.
